Lay the machine face down on a thick towel. If it has the plastic shield across the bottom, remove the screw and take the plastic shield off. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br />Directly below the handwheel, on the bottom of the machine is another long screw. Remove that screw, and the end panel will come off. </span></span><br />

Spray some on the shaft that the handwheel goes onto, and clean it off with a rag. It may take 2 applications if it’s really frozen up. Make sure all the WD-40 is removed, then put about 3 drops of sewing machine oil on the shaft. <br /><br />Put the belt onto the handwheel and make sure the belt is also seated in the inside groove of the pulley, then push the handwheel back on. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Replace the metal ring with the nubs facing outward. You have 3 positions that the ring can go on. You’ll know you’ve got the right one, when the clutch will release, but it will also hold it locked for sewing. You have to have the center knob all the way on before you can check.</span></span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-38504525226722370732019-03-13T19:30:00.001-07:002019-03-13T19:30:52.767-07:00Adjusting the Needle/Hook Distance on a Brother XR37 Sewing Machine<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-shQq1LwO26V1UJNNxZcm6H8hH9vJa0J" target="_blank">Here's a pdf. </a></span><br />

I think that would work very well! Just use the finer side, as the courser side might leave scratches. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
I'm not a fingernail girl, so it's a good thing Patti corrected me. This should be a "fingernail buffer," not a "fingernail file." <a href="http://www.sallybeauty.com/dw/image/v2/AABJ_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-SBS-SallyBeautySupply/default/dw855abb51/images/large/SBS-707001.jpg?sw=1000&sh=1000&sm=fit&sfrm=png" target="_blank">Here's a link to a picture on Sally Beauty Supply</a>. I happen to have a Pfaff 1197 at home, so I've taken it apart, and here's how to put it back together.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PClU9-naTPc/WbIJQE1nA0I/AAAAAAAAAnY/SbzI_WUgBI0Lc3e1n3j5h0FOqnzV4PMtgCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bon%2Bw%2Bbelt.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PClU9-naTPc/WbIJQE1nA0I/AAAAAAAAAnY/SbzI_WUgBI0Lc3e1n3j5h0FOqnzV4PMtgCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bon%2Bw%2Bbelt.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I've taken the top of the machine and the side panel off. Then unscrew the plastic screw in the center of the knob. Work the outside belt off so you can remove the knob.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C-QOfHyW-JM/WbIJPHJoHYI/AAAAAAAAAnQ/ucMXOKskV2c19FlDeZhwA5VTvfQOlKvtwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2B2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="721" data-original-width="1200" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C-QOfHyW-JM/WbIJPHJoHYI/AAAAAAAAAnQ/ucMXOKskV2c19FlDeZhwA5VTvfQOlKvtwCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2B2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's what the knob looks like inside. There are 2 black plastic knob parts, one black part with an oval hole, one white part and a small spring.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Edited to add: Remove any white waxy grease that has hardened and replace it with Tri-flow grease. </span><br />
</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rdPsWvOjo38/WbIJQAsT2TI/AAAAAAAAAno/Vi8GreNILPwUW-DCWwIR-HIRtnesnVGrwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="740" data-original-width="1200" height="246" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rdPsWvOjo38/WbIJQAsT2TI/AAAAAAAAAno/Vi8GreNILPwUW-DCWwIR-HIRtnesnVGrwCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The first thing to do is to put the spring in place. It just sits in the little trough that is molded to just the right size.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WuT-oIpBuxM/WbIJQVH5UMI/AAAAAAAAAno/XpxlPGMFUwwyf_cq9t5HsTPxN4fPpEs8gCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1139" data-original-width="1200" height="378" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WuT-oIpBuxM/WbIJQVH5UMI/AAAAAAAAAno/XpxlPGMFUwwyf_cq9t5HsTPxN4fPpEs8gCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next, put the white plastic part in. The white part has a post on the underside that fits into a small round hole.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hOdS1DY_icU/WbIMYH-wmaI/AAAAAAAAAnw/tZHgYoL30cYgLIPV_AZW_E1_egBIDSUSwCLcBGAs/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1200" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hOdS1DY_icU/WbIMYH-wmaI/AAAAAAAAAnw/tZHgYoL30cYgLIPV_AZW_E1_egBIDSUSwCLcBGAs/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Then put the black part with the oval hole onto the center shaft. The protrusion will go into the square hole in the handwheel.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QH8VT-v_CxY/WbIMYNV_SqI/AAAAAAAAAn0/-CSLeJF-dTgllwd5qWU8ONHcd_3dRrtZACLcBGAs/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B3C.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1143" data-original-width="1200" height="380" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QH8VT-v_CxY/WbIMYNV_SqI/AAAAAAAAAn0/-CSLeJF-dTgllwd5qWU8ONHcd_3dRrtZACLcBGAs/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B3C.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now position the white part so it rides on the outside of the black part.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bimw-DX7FLM/WbIJQ7xGUeI/AAAAAAAAAno/L21mAuzwE4c60t-cOxqafqYZTS95QbZqwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B3B.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1340" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bimw-DX7FLM/WbIJQ7xGUeI/AAAAAAAAAno/L21mAuzwE4c60t-cOxqafqYZTS95QbZqwCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bstep%2B3B.jpg" width="357" /></a></div><p>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then put the center knob on top, with the black post going into the curved trough on the knob.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Edited to add: Make sure the shaft is clean and well oiled (with sewing machine oil) before you put the handwheel back on. </span><br />
<br />
</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PClU9-naTPc/WbIJQE1nA0I/AAAAAAAAAno/30nDc2bnAu0iUgUa3A7MNO_hHWof6ChygCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bon%2Bw%2Bbelt.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PClU9-naTPc/WbIJQE1nA0I/AAAAAAAAAno/30nDc2bnAu0iUgUa3A7MNO_hHWof6ChygCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bon%2Bw%2Bbelt.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Hold the parts together as you put it back on the shaft. Then put the belt back on.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NhdkyLuHbFM/WbIJPQdqW-I/AAAAAAAAAno/iH16vpmjDEsZ1_lPD_CW6ZS3SjQeC2W_wCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bbroken.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="866" data-original-width="1200" height="287" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NhdkyLuHbFM/WbIJPQdqW-I/AAAAAAAAAno/iH16vpmjDEsZ1_lPD_CW6ZS3SjQeC2W_wCEwYBhgL/s400/Pfaff%2BBWC%2Bbroken.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Put the washer on the plastic screw, and carefully screw it into the shaft. Don't tighten it too tight, or you'll break the screw off. Dang! It's a good thing I can get a replacement part #0401655-BSCREW Pfaff Hand Wheel Black Plastic. Retail on those is about $6.</span><br /><br />She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com37tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-9164396208211682032017-07-27T06:45:00.005-07:002017-08-03T06:14:00.171-07:00Rotary Hook That Jams<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

It needs to be a good, durable sewing machine, that will grow with skill level.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">To get a new machine that would be more durable, you’d need to spend at least $700. There are a lot of new machines that have lots of bells and whistles, but they all have a plastic bobbin case, that can cause a lot of frustration. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">You might want to look on Craigslist.com, and see what <u><b>used machines</b></u> are available in your area. For new sewists, I recommend an old Kenmore 10 stitch, or something similar. I LOVE the old Kenmores! And you can usually find one in a thrift store for less than $25. Some only have straight and zig-zag stitches, with a door on top to add cams. You don’t want that, you want one with built-in cams/stitches. You also don’t want the old, top-loading Kenmores, as that bobbin/hook system is a nightmare. You want a front-loading machine with all metal hook and bobbin case, and a few extra stitches built-in. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Mh2rztbdnY/WSD_yOy0-0I/AAAAAAAAAkc/DMypx0OUyKEgmvaFnUaaPQVshsN1VhwYACLcB/s1600/SewingMachineParts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Mh2rztbdnY/WSD_yOy0-0I/AAAAAAAAAkc/DMypx0OUyKEgmvaFnUaaPQVshsN1VhwYACLcB/s400/SewingMachineParts.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">If you've got your heart set on a "NEW" machine, Try a Singer "Simple." It has the metal oscillating hook and some nice stitches.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Most people only use a handful of stitches. The ones most people need are straight stitch, zig-zag, blind hem and serpentine (or broken zig-zag). If you’re a quilter, you need the blanket-stitch for applique. And a nice decorative stitch or two is good. If you’re sewing heavy fabrics, you need a front loading, metal hook and bobbin case. The plastic bobbin cases jam when you sew heavy fabric, and the needle goes right through them. Then you have to buy a new bobbin case. If you’re doing light sewing, like piecing a quilt, a cheap plastic machine will work just fine. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The auto thread cutters (under the needle plate) seem like a good idea, but they haven’t been perfected yet, and can cause a lot of grief.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">To check the quality of a machine, grab the needle bar and try to wiggle it forward and backward. If it has forward/backward wiggle, the needle hook distance (a timing setting) is variable and you’re not likely to get as good stitch quality.</span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-36249309157852001772017-02-05T14:54:00.000-08:002017-02-05T14:54:42.723-08:00Singer Bobbin Winder<span style="font-size: large;">I had a question about how to put a Singer 4562 bobbin winder back together. Here's a picture of a Singer 30920 bobbin winder. I hope they're similar enough.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">As you can see, the spring hooks onto the arm above it, and just "pokes" into the hole below it.</span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-62824604530419545852017-01-24T12:55:00.000-08:002017-06-12T21:26:23.971-07:00Singer 15-99 / Removing the Hook<span style="font-size: large;">I was asked how to remove the hook from a Singer model 99, so you can get some thread out of there. Here's a picture of my Singer 15-99.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MZtWdj5kTes/WIe81pU4d8I/AAAAAAAAAf0/3FnKGYK3bp4ErtNUawdiwiIV6KJ5Lz11wCLcB/s1600/Singer%2B99-15%2BF.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MZtWdj5kTes/WIe81pU4d8I/AAAAAAAAAf0/3FnKGYK3bp4ErtNUawdiwiIV6KJ5Lz11wCLcB/s400/Singer%2B99-15%2BF.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's the hook, all assembled.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k8CKZeWoYeA/WIe8SmRB7DI/AAAAAAAAAfo/s6rD8zaZXCYssdI7bw_vsvsc9B-nOd4mQCEw/s1600/Singer%2B99-15%2BA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k8CKZeWoYeA/WIe8SmRB7DI/AAAAAAAAAfo/s6rD8zaZXCYssdI7bw_vsvsc9B-nOd4mQCEw/s400/Singer%2B99-15%2BA.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The first thing to do, is unscrew the big, black screw. When you get the screw out, The retainer will come off. Then you can pull the race cover and hook out.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fZrDzWRRUtQ/WIe8TKq3vTI/AAAAAAAAAfs/sOM3tKZJMZksqOOwCJMFFmnCK7vrRECgACEw/s1600/Singer%2B99-15%2BD.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fZrDzWRRUtQ/WIe8TKq3vTI/AAAAAAAAAfs/sOM3tKZJMZksqOOwCJMFFmnCK7vrRECgACEw/s400/Singer%2B99-15%2BD.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now you can clean any lint out. Pay particular attention to getting the lint out of the race (which is the ledge that the hook sits on). Put a drop of oil on the race.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">When you put it back together, the hook goes in first, then the race cover. Make sure the pins go through the little holes on each side of the race cover, and that the beveled edges are facing outward.</span> <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RCk_Eh12ews/WIe8SWALP7I/AAAAAAAAAfk/zzZKr7zJfhE9wkv3crRnDgJkQkrt4I6lQCEw/s1600/Singer%2B99-15%2BC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="343" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RCk_Eh12ews/WIe8SWALP7I/AAAAAAAAAfk/zzZKr7zJfhE9wkv3crRnDgJkQkrt4I6lQCEw/s400/Singer%2B99-15%2BC.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Last, put the retainer back on. Make sure the bent "hands" grab each side of the race cover. Tighten the screw.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pX01Lf-d71o/WIe8RxQPhtI/AAAAAAAAAfg/nnfRzLPVtNARpba-e_wgIPpTul0NIPRHgCEw/s1600/Singer%2B99-15%2BB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pX01Lf-d71o/WIe8RxQPhtI/AAAAAAAAAfg/nnfRzLPVtNARpba-e_wgIPpTul0NIPRHgCEw/s400/Singer%2B99-15%2BB.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

One on the right (under the bobbin winder lid), and one on the left (built into the bobbin winder tensioner). Push down, then turn a quarter of a turn. You'll know you're in the right position if the screw pops up.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oK8-3X_uBTU/VsqkdUWmziI/AAAAAAAAAeY/ZubAt7zjZkg/s1600/Screw%2BUnder%2BBobbin%2BWinder%2BLid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oK8-3X_uBTU/VsqkdUWmziI/AAAAAAAAAeY/ZubAt7zjZkg/s400/Screw%2BUnder%2BBobbin%2BWinder%2BLid.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-csXArwdSvFM/Vsqkdbx5fMI/AAAAAAAAAeg/KPUEpIQWEzc/s1600/Tensioner%2BScrew.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-csXArwdSvFM/Vsqkdbx5fMI/AAAAAAAAAeg/KPUEpIQWEzc/s400/Tensioner%2BScrew.jpg" width="377" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Once you get inside, you can clean and oil, and adjust the presser foot tension. Here's where that adjustment is.</span><br />

There were a few Singers with this rocker-type bobbin winder clutch. There's not much to them, and they're a lot different than the typical handwheel-type clutch.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Before you do anything else, check to make sure that the rubber O-ring (or tire) on the big round hub is in place, and is in good condition. It should be supple, and have no cracks. This can easily be replaced, and usually costs less than a dollar.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Also (as Ryan pointed out below), you'll want to make sure the spindle will turn easily. If it's frozen, you can try two things. First, I usually put some WD-40 in the cracks and work it until it's loose. Always blow the WD-40 out with an air compressor or canned air. Then re-oil. If that fails, you can pop the c-clamp off, disassemble the bobbin winder, clean it, and put some oil on the shaft directly. Then put it back together. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Next, we'll take a look at the inside of the clutch. You can carefully pry off the rocker with a screwdriver. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Inside the handwheel, you'll see the center shaft, and the notches along the outer portion of the handwheel.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If the notches are damaged, the handwheel would need to be replaced. If that's the case, you'd be better off putting your money into a new sewing machine. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If the metal clip or the plastic that holds the metal clip are broken, it would need to be replaced. Once again, you may be better off putting your money into a new sewing machine. </span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com29tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-44158465916047213112014-12-06T18:52:00.001-08:002015-04-17T16:22:05.386-07:00Using WD-40 On Sewing Machines<span style="font-size: large;">There's a lot of controversy about using WD-40 on sewing machines. Let's talk...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZRJHVpg028w/VIO9a8gAb4I/AAAAAAAAAZQ/2_jmWbVGCcU/s1600/WD-40.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZRJHVpg028w/VIO9a8gAb4I/AAAAAAAAAZQ/2_jmWbVGCcU/s1600/WD-40.jpg" height="320" width="137" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I use WD-40 on sewing machines, almost every day at work. However, I don't use it as a<b><i> <u>lubricant</u></i></b>, I use it as a <b><i><u>solvent</u></i></b>. WD-40 breaks down the old, gummy oil very well. If you're not equipped to remove the WD-40, it will continue to break down the oil. At work, we use an air compressor and flannel rags to remove the WD-40 and the gunk it dissolves. If you don't have an air compressor, you can use a can of air -- but it has to be a full can with some good pressure.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: #cc0000;">Don't use WD-40 on certain longarm quilting machines and industrial sewing machines. Some of these have porous bearings that will hold onto the WD-40.</span> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The procedure goes like this...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 1) Blow out all the lint with an air compressor. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 2) <b><i><u>Generously</u></i></b> spray the gummed-up area with WD-40.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 3) Work the mechanisms until they are moving freely.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 4) Blow out the WD-40 and gunk with an air compressor. This takes a while. You continue to blow until there are no more wet spots. Turn the hand wheel to get all sides of the sprayed parts.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 5) Wipe up the mess with flannel rags.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 6) Go back and blow some more with the air compressor.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 7) Apply new oil. Only use clear "sewing machine oil," not 3-in-1 oil (or sewing machine grease except for very specific spots).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Some people will say that "someone" told them to NEVER use WD-40 on a sewing machine. But I have to ask, who is "someone?" And was "someone" talking about using it as a lubricant? <u>This</u> "someone" LOVES to use WD-40 on sewing machines! It works very well to remove the gummy stuff.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I've also seen where "someone" used WD-40, and it made matters worse. I think they probably didn't use enough WD-40, and didn't get the gunk dissolved completely. So, the gunk was still there. <br />I've only had 5 years</span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"> (almost)</span> of experience, but have never had a problem with WD-40 making things worse.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Some may say to just keep oiling the machine, and it will eventually break loose. Nonsense! The old, gummy oil is still there! The old gummy oil needs to be removed, and WD-40 is the tool for the job. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">OK, there's my very own, personal, private, take on the WD-40 controversy. But then, I tend to figure things out and think for myself. I <u><i><b>know</b></i></u> I'm not the only sewing machine mechanic who uses it! </span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com58tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-77181382333863749332014-11-21T15:27:00.001-08:002020-10-21T21:08:04.563-07:00Row By Row Experience Pattern Now Available<span style="font-size: large;">My 2014 Row By Row Experience pattern, Snowflake Collection, is now available to purchase for just $2.95! <span style="font-size: large;">This is my Bernina 800 DL serger, "Ben" (short for "Benevolence," because he was practically given to me). I got lucky! I've worked at a quilt shop that sells and repairs sewing machines for over 10 years. When the assistant tech retired, The Boss asked me if I’d like to learn. I had worked on cars a little and enjoyed it. And I have a high mechanical IQ. So I was pretty excited about the offer! I’ve been training as a sewing machine mechanic for over 8 years, and I still learn something new every day, and The Boss still has to help me with the hard stuff. There's a lot to learn!<br /><br />The best way to learn, is to become an apprentice to someone who has been doing it for a long time. The Boss started learning when he was 16, and he’ll be 57 soon. He didn’t really have anyone to teach him, and he’ll tell you that he “learned from the school of hard knocks.” So he's a patient man, and doesn’t get upset with me when I make mistakes. Making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn.... as long as you don’t do any permanent damage. :-) </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If you can't train under a pro, here are some ideas... </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1) I’ve seen some good books on Amazon about
sewing machine maintenance. They can teach you the basics. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">2) The older mechanical machines are a good place to start. You can get
them from the thrift store for $10 to $25. Take them through the "What To Check..." list that's at the top of my blog, and see if you can get them sewing.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">3) If you become a sewing machine dealer, you can attend
their conventions. I’ve been to “Bernina University” once. But you
don’t really learn much from power point presentations. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">4) There’s a website,
where you can get help with working on vintage sewing machines...
http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1/ Just above the quilting board,
there’s a section “For Vintage and Antique Machine Enthusiasts.” There are some nice people there, who are great about answering your questions.<br /><br />5) There are so many variables in sewing machines, that you need to be the kind of person who can figure things out. We very rarely use the service manuals. We know the basics, and figure out the rest. There's so much that <u><i><b>isn't</b></i></u> in the manual!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> 6) You NEVER want to start un-screwing things that you don’t know what they do. We had a woman try to adjust the timing on her Bernina, and really scrambled her machine. She unscrewed things that we are taught to NEVER unscrew, even as sewing machine mechanics. It would cost her about $400 to send it to Bernina and have them unscramble it. We’ve had a few older mechanical machines that have been scrambled beyond repair, as well.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Being a sewing machine mechanic is fun and rewarding... most of the
time. Other times, I’m really glad The Boss is there to help me. I can't imagine trying to figure out all of these machines by myself, without The Boss to take care of the harder ones.</span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-30203438220648180392014-06-16T08:53:00.001-07:002014-06-16T09:09:45.269-07:00What To Check Before Taking Your Machine To The Shop<span style="font-size: large;">I've added a new page! I only sold the drop-in bobbin Kenmore at my sewing machine yard sale, for $50.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then I sold the other Kenmore for $100, the Montgomery Ward for $100, and the Riccar for $50, to the same person. She has about 15 ladies who sew cheerleader, drill team and ballroom dance costumes for her.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The White is the only one left. I'm asking $110 for it. I had a woman come to look at it, and it wouldn't work. We got it into the buttonhole system, and couldn't get it back out. Of course, as she was driving away, Karl (my DH) flipped the switch and it popped right out. I will de-gum it and make sure it won't do that again, before I sell it.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Update: The White has a new home. I got $100 for it.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">All but one of my machines were bought by people I know through my job or quilt guild. I give a 30-day warranty with all of my refurbished machines. And I hope they will feel free to contact me if there are any problems. </span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-55798868389963890142013-09-08T18:55:00.001-07:002013-11-17T16:42:15.319-08:00Refurbished Sewing Machines<span style="font-size: large;">I've been collecting and repairing machines for a few months, and have 6 ready to sell. </tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So, what do I look for in a thrift store machine? </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">#1 does it have an oscillating hook system. Yes, I'm prejudiced, but am softening a bit.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">#2 does it have all of its parts? hook, bobbin case, presser foot, foot control, needle plate, sew table, etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">#3 does it run and function like it should? We bought one that was missing its back-stitch mechanism, and was too old to get a replacement.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">#4 Has it been knocked or dropped, and is the race intact? If the race, or ledge that the hook sits on, is broken off, it might sew but will make a terrible banging sound. If it's been knocked or dropped, it may have some bent shafts or broken internal parts.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We can tweak things like a burr on the hook or the timing (unless its been scrambled beyond repair). We can clean up the old gummy oil, most of the time. Some machines would take major surgery to clean up the old oil, and it wouldn't be cost effective. I'm having a bit of trouble with noisy Kenmores. I know they have a rattle, but these are extra loud. I haven't figured out how to quiet them, yet.</span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-55559578229830912592013-09-03T20:49:00.003-07:002013-09-03T21:41:37.186-07:00Drop-in Bobbin Case Position<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OHdlVha9Djk/UiarctnStDI/AAAAAAAAAI0/a2zny68aDSw/s1600/Drop-in+Bobbin+Basket+Placement.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OHdlVha9Djk/UiarctnStDI/AAAAAAAAAI0/a2zny68aDSw/s640/Drop-in+Bobbin+Basket+Placement.jpg" width="410" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's a picture of an open Drop-in Bobbin System. This is a picture I took of a Bernette, but is similar to a Singer 7422. The bobbin holder (sometimes called a bobbin basket or bobbin case) is in its place in the top picture. You shouldn't have to loosen any screws to remove the bobbin holder. But if it's hard to get out, turn the hand wheel until the opening in the hook is just below the retention finger. The hook is the metal ring that goes around when you turn the hand wheel. To put the bobbin holder back in, there's a small bump at the front, that can bounce on the spring. And a bigger, flat bump on the opposite side that the finger will touch.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Some other sewing machine mechanic wanted to charge $40 to put a bobbin holder in!?!? You can do this!!!</span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-27942599282718997962013-07-04T17:12:00.002-07:002013-07-04T17:36:12.999-07:00Take A Closer Look At Your Bobbin<span style="font-size: large;">The bobbin is a simple thing, but it can cause some big problems. Here are a few examples...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g7j-VEWqZSE/UdYRF3fZEyI/AAAAAAAAAGo/3DuFihhcAfQ/s370/Bad+Bobbin+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g7j-VEWqZSE/UdYRF3fZEyI/AAAAAAAAAGo/3DuFihhcAfQ/s400/Bad+Bobbin+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This bobbin has multiple layers of thread wound onto it. Yes, it's frugal, but have you thought about what's going to happen when one layer comes to an end or gets tangled under another layer? It may cause the needle to jerk, and put a burr on your hook and/or break a needle.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PT_rTzk_ON8/UdYRGPowRyI/AAAAAAAAAG4/cKpilRHJ0LM/s370/Bad+Bobbin+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PT_rTzk_ON8/UdYRGPowRyI/AAAAAAAAAG4/cKpilRHJ0LM/s400/Bad+Bobbin+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This bobbin has been wound very loosely. It won't feed evenly, and your tension will look very bad.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ylQjaiKmGbE/UdYRGOSGOwI/AAAAAAAAAGs/5XwHq3lGS70/s370/Bad+Bobbin+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ylQjaiKmGbE/UdYRGOSGOwI/AAAAAAAAAGs/5XwHq3lGS70/s400/Bad+Bobbin+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This bobbin has a loose thread, so instead of spinning smoothly inside the bobbin case, it will rattle and jerk and give you a bad stitch.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OkLPh9NOWRw/UdYRGTt8kQI/AAAAAAAAAG0/GllCMtX0hQY/s370/Bad+Bobbin+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OkLPh9NOWRw/UdYRGTt8kQI/AAAAAAAAAG0/GllCMtX0hQY/s400/Bad+Bobbin+4.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This bobbin also has a loose thread that got wrapped around the outside. It cannot give you a smooth stitch.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">So, pay attention to the little things!</span></div>

DH got it for the foot control, but I want to try to fix it up to sell. The problem seems to be that the previous owner used the wrong kind of oil. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It took DH's muscles to un-screw the center knob. And my sons helped me get the handwheel off. After trying to pull it off, we tried to pry it off with a screw driver, which didn't work. Then we finally positioned a screw driver on the inside metal casing, and smacked it with a hammer.<span style="font-size: large;"> That worked!</span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uY_mLIej_50/UXCbCbJnH7I/AAAAAAAAADM/d45Yoc0sFIc/s1600/Wrong+Oil+Before.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uY_mLIej_50/UXCbCbJnH7I/AAAAAAAAADM/d45Yoc0sFIc/s400/Wrong+Oil+Before.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The "Before" picture is fuzzy, but you can see the red-ish, sticky, old oil. That is what old oil or the wrong kind of oil looks like, and it<span style="font-size: large;"> feels</span> tacky to the touch. It's just like glue.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BX0rILCBbXY/UXCbCdx8hQI/AAAAAAAAADQ/hwFkH9nrg1E/s1600/Wrong+Oil+After.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BX0rILCBbXY/UXCbCdx8hQI/AAAAAAAAADQ/hwFkH9nrg1E/s400/Wrong+Oil+After.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">To remove the old, gummy oil, I put some WD-40 on it and scrubbed it with an old toothbrush. It didn't get all of it off, so I used a very fine sandpaper to get the rest off. The inside of the casing on the handwheel also needed scrubbing as did the center knob and the position ring.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So<span style="font-size: large;">, what kind of oil should you use? Only "sewing machine oil." That doesn't include 3-in-1 oil, engine oil, olive oil, or FAX machine oil. And, as you can see, it doesn't include WD-40. We only use <span style="font-size: large;">WD-40 to <span style="font-size: large;">REMOVE the old oil.</span></span></span> </span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com47tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3513171683722470036.post-44325573571816947952013-02-16T18:00:00.002-08:002013-07-15T19:34:07.971-07:00Sewing Machine Tensions<span style="font-size: large;">Lets talk about tensions. When a machine comes into the shop, no matter what the problem is, the customer will usually say, "it's the tension." If the timing is off, "it's the tension." If there's a burr on the hook, "it's the tension." If the needle is in backwards, "it's the tension." You get the idea.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I'll do a run through on how we balance the tensions at the shop.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Before we can work with tensions, we clean and oil throughout the whole machine. It's especially important to clean and oil your bobbin area before working with the tensions. That's something you should be comfortable doing yourself.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">When you thread your machine, the presser foot has to be in the up position, to open the upper tension disks. If the presser foot is down, the tension disks are closed tight, and the thread can't get into them. When that happens, your fabric will have loops on the bottom, like this...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zDkAI9NwQIw/USA49BJnq6I/AAAAAAAAACI/LKoblyvTfcQ/s1600/No+Top+Tension.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="60" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zDkAI9NwQIw/USA49BJnq6I/AAAAAAAAACI/LKoblyvTfcQ/s400/No+Top+Tension.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">You can click on the pictures to ma<span style="font-size: large;">ke them bigger.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next, make sure there's no lint in the upper tension disks <i><b>or</b></i> inside the bobbin case. You can sweep the lint out with your lint brush.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then set your upper tension dial on "normal." If you don't have a "normal" setting marked on the dial, set it at 3.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Correctly thread your machine, top and bobbin. Put a light colored thread in the bobbin and a medium to dark colored thread in the top.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Set your machine to do a medium zig-zag (unless your machine is just a straight-stitch machine). On most machines it's 3 on the width and 2 on the length.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sew on a light colored, good quality, cotton fabric for about 6." </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GMclDFvUwdU/USA5WwWPELI/AAAAAAAAACY/RQwITVuwZD0/s1600/Tight+Loose+Tension.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="136" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GMclDFvUwdU/USA5WwWPELI/AAAAAAAAACY/RQwITVuwZD0/s400/Tight+Loose+Tension.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">If the bobbin thread is pulling to the top, tighten the bobbin case tension by turning the little screw to the right. Remember, "righty tighty, lefty loosey." Here's some pictures of bobbin case tension screws...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8Fumb-vAsAo/USA5M2DnDAI/AAAAAAAAACQ/a1a223NRm0A/s1600/Bobbin+Case+Screw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="125" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8Fumb-vAsAo/USA5M2DnDAI/AAAAAAAAACQ/a1a223NRm0A/s400/Bobbin+Case+Screw.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If the top thread is pulling to the bottom, that's what you want it to do. But, you only want the top thread to be a "tick" on the back. If it's really pulling to the back, loosen the bobbin case tension by turning the little screw to the left.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">After working with the bobbin case tension, if you're still not sewing well, try adjusting the top tension. It works just opposite of the bobbin case tension. If the thread is still pulling to the top, loosen the upper tension. If the thread is still pulling to the bottom, tighten the upper tension.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's my nearly perfect sew-off sample.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5YYeYQZJuvw/USA5n52KAqI/AAAAAAAAACg/UUQWBoKGhgM/s1600/Nearly+Perfect+Tension.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="163" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5YYeYQZJuvw/USA5n52KAqI/AAAAAAAAACg/UUQWBoKGhgM/s400/Nearly+Perfect+Tension.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If you're still not sewing well, it may <i><b>not</b></i> be the tensions, and you may need to take your machine to the shop.</span>She's A Sewing Machine Mechanichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14467365513805350236noreply@blogger.com3
